Nokia To Kill S40, Symbian Efforts In North America

Nokia-Logo (1)If you were to sit down and look at all the devices Nokia has for sale in the United States, you may come away thinking that they weren't in the business of making impressive devices. With only a few exceptions, Nokia's domestic offerings are low-end, S40-powered talk-and-texters -- hardly what one would expect from the self-proclaimed "world leader" of the cell phone industry.

Nokia: the N9 isn't coming to America

If you've been eagerly awaiting September 23rd so you can grab your very own Nokia N9 in America, the company's first (and last) MeeGo smartphone may not be shipping in your region after all. We've been reaching out to Espoo in recent weeks in an attempt to nail down a US ship date for the drop-dead gorgeous handset, and much to our chagrin, we received a rather disheartening reply:

"After the very positive reception to the launch of the Nokia N9, the product is now being rolled out in countries around the world. At this time we will not be making it available in the US. Nokia takes a market by market approach to product rollout, and each country makes its own decisions about which products to introduce from those available. Decisions are based on an assessment of existing and upcoming products that make up Nokia's extensive product portfolio and the best way in which to address local market opportunities."

Bummer. Moreover, the folks over at The Inquirer were fed an eerily similar line regarding a ship date in the UK, leaving us to wonder where exactly this thing is planning to launch. Regardless, we're still doing our darndest to get ahold of one for review, but it's becoming all the more obvious that it'll hardly matter to folks situated in the US of A. And that, friends, is a crying shame.

Microbots do heavy-lifting, self-repair, dance aquatic ballet (video)

Scientists at the Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory are talking up a type of millimeter-sized microbots that can swim and use their "jaws" to move around objects multiple times their own weight. The tiny 'bots are made up of microparticles and don't do much on their own, but once magnets are applied, they form star shapes and swim around, even opening and closing to push around non-magnetic objects. The "asters," as they're known, will also reshuffle their parts, if they lose any particles, effectively reassembling themselves. Videos of tiny robot dance numbers after the break.

Of Horseshoes, Hand Grenades and Broadband Advertising

Broadband service providers in the United States are celebrating the results of the Federal Communications Commission's findings on the contentious question of broadband speeds in the country. The FCC has found that actual sustained download speeds are much closer to the speeds advertised by ISPs than was the case in early 2009.

Half-Pint Hackers and Rats in the Walls

It's been a mighty interesting week in security. Kids learned about cryptography and received a special visit from federal authorities at a special session at DefCon, McAfee is duking it out with other security vendors over Operation Shady Rat, facial recognition is stripping away what little is left of our privacy, and Microsoft is offering big bucks for anyone who comes up with a new security technology.

Smugglers use zip line and slingshot to sneak iPads into Shenzhen

smugglers' zip lineChinese smugglers turned to a rather low-tech method for getting a pile of decidedly high-tech iPads and iPhones across the border to Shenzhen, in a scheme to make money off of regional tax differences. The unsanctioned exporters fired a slingshot from a high-rise in Shenzen, dragging a zip line down to a small house just across the Sha Tau Kok river in Hong Kong. They then sent canvas bags loaded with the gadgets flying through the night sky along the projectile-placed cable -- at least until authorities spotted the gear hurtling through the air, that is. Police recovered about $46,000 worth of Apple products (and four culprits) when they discovered the end of the 300-meter line. Check out the video below for a little Chinese-language news coverage of the story and a glimpse an the simple, but ingenious, smuggling rig.

Facebook launches unified mobile site, announces 250 million mobile users

Facebook has announced that its two mobile sites -- m.facebook.com and touch.facebook.com -- have been unified, bringing a simpler mobile experience to Facebook users. And there are a lot of those -- a quarter billion, according to Facebook.

Smartphone users won't be losing any functionality because of the consolidation. If your phone supported the enhacned features offered by touch.facebook.com, the new site will automatically flip the switch when you visit.

Rolling the sites together helps simplify things for Facebook's developer team. Now changes can be pushed to a single site instead of two separate sites, which makes it easier to ensure that all mobile users receive a nearly identical experience regardless of the device they're using.

The new Facebook mobile can also check to see if your phone supports geolocation. If it doesn't, you won't be seeing much of Facebook Places -- which obviously relies heavily on geolocation. Images can also be optimized on the fly to keep page performance from suffering on less powerful devices. You can see the three different versions of the share button below, courtesy our friends at TechCrunch.
